Introduction ~
Welcome to my culminating experience. This e-Portfolio represents my mastery of the 14 core competencies of librarianship over a two and a half year period. This portfolio is an opportunity for me to identify individual strengths and to develop a professional growth plan for my much anticipated career in librarianship. As I prepare for graduation from San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science (SJSU SLIS), I am thankful for this opportunity to reflect on the LIS concepts I have become familiar with, to evaluate my understanding of the different facets of librarianship, and to articulate the professional philosophy I have developed.
Weebly, I am able to manipulate content and layout freely with the goal of providing those who visit the website with a complete sketch of who I am as an individual, what I have accomplished at SLIS, and what I hope to accomplish in the future. In the development stages of the website I decided to keep the interface simple so the focus of the portfolio remains on content and my accomplishments as a student of librarianship.
Preparation for this e-Portfolio began during my first semester in SLIS. I am a planner so I needed to understand the requirements of the portfolio from the outset. I kept the culminating experience always in the fore of my thoughts when completing assignments and summarizing as each course came to a close. I created a file folder for each course (both paper and electronic), and I saved a copy of each course greensheet so that if I needed to be reminded of a course description it was only a reach away. Keeping coursework well organized is a key factor in successfully completing the program and organization also helps in preserving one's sanity. With my solid foundation of understanding established (including an understanding of what each of the competencies means to me and an understanding of each competency's importance within the field of Librarianship and Information Science), by the summer of 2010 I was ready to begin writing for the portfolio. A summer with no coursework is the perfect time to start compiling an e-Portfolio: there are no deadlines, no pressure to produce, and I was able to thoroughly comb through coursework and evaluate how each assignment relates to each of the 14 core competencies. My writing process throughout the summer included constant brainstorming, mapping out key factors, reflection and contemplation, pre-writing or journaling, editing, more editing, even more editing. My background in fiction writing helped me focus on the writing process and view this portfolio as a work of art so it would not seem like such a daunting task. By taking cues from instructors and thinking about the portfolio early and often, I felt confident and well prepared to begin this culminating adventure . . . one competency at a time.

I have throroughly enjoyed the last two and a half years in SLIS, and I hope I have represented that enjoyment here in this portfolio. This culmination of coursework and reflection has brought me full-circle from an excited, energetic freshman who hardly knew the meaning of OPAC to a well-rounded graduate of Library and Informaiton Science equipped with the skills needed to begin and sustain a successful career in librarianship. Wherever my journey leads me, I am ready, and this culminating project is the proof that I carry with me.
